ADVANCED DRY EYE CARE / LIGHT THERAPY PROTOCOL

Treating Dry Eye with our Light Therapy Protocol.

At L0•0K Optometric, our Light Therapy Protocol combines Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy and medical grade Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) in the same visit to treat inflammatory and evaporative dry eye from multiple angles.

IPL helps target the ocular rosacea and inflammation that contributes to meibomian gland dysfunction, while Low-Level Light Therapy uses gentle therapeutic light to support gland function, tissue recovery, and ocular surface comfort. When performed together, these treatments are designed to work synergistically — helping calm inflammation, improve oil gland performance, and support a healthier tear film.

WHAT IT IS

A combined light-based treatment for inflammatory dry eye.

Most chronic dry eye is not simply a lack of tears. For many patients, symptoms are driven by inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction, where the oil glands along the eyelids become blocked or stop producing healthy oil for the tear film.

Our Light Therapy Protocol combines two advanced in-office treatments:

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy uses calibrated pulses of light to reduce inflammation around the eyelids, target abnormal blood vessels that contribute to chronic inflammation, and improve meibomian gland function.

Low-Level Light Therapy uses gentle therapeutic light to warm and stimulate the eyelids, supporting healthier gland activity, tissue repair, and ocular surface comfort.

Together, IPL and LLLT allow us to address dry eye more comprehensively than either treatment alone.

The treatment is designed to help:

Reduce inflammation around the meibomian glands

Improve meibomian gland function and oil flow

Support a more stable tear film

Improve ocular surface comfort

Reduce the cycle of irritation, redness, burning, and fluctuating vision

For patients with meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, or inflammatory dry eye, the Light Therapy Protocol is one of the most effective therapeutic combinations available.

THE PROTOCOL

Your Light Therapy Treatment, Step By Step.

Consultation and Diagnostic Workup

Before treatment, we confirm whether light therapy is appropriate for your eyes using advanced dry eye testing, meibography, tear film analysis, and ocular surface evaluation.

(light thearapy 2).png

Treatment Series

The FDA approved treatment protocol includes a series of 4 sessions spaced several weeks apart. The exact number and frequency depend on the severity of your dry eye, gland function, skin type, and treatment goals.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

We protect your eyes, apply cooling gel to the treatment area, and deliver calibrated pulses of light along the cheeks and surrounding treatment zone. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick warm snap.

Low-Level Light Therapy

After IPL, Low-Level Light Therapy is performed to deliver gentle therapeutic light to the eyelids and surrounding tissue. This step helps support gland function, speed tissue recovery, and the overall response to treatment.

Meibomian Gland Expression

When appropriate, we manually express the meibomian glands after light therapy to help release blocked or thickened oils and restore better oil flow to the tear film. If needed, this is typically done after the second or third treatment

Maintenance

After the initial treatment series, the literature recommends a single maintenance treatment every 6 months to help preserve gland function and keep symptoms controlled over time.

COMBINE

Why combine IPL and LLLT?

Two technologies, one coordinated treatment.

IPL and LLLT work in different but complementary ways. IPL is used to address inflammation and vascular changes that contribute to chronic dry eye, while LLLT provides gentle therapeutic light and warmth to support gland function and ocular surface recovery.

By performing both treatments on the same day, our Light Therapy Protocol is designed to create a more complete treatment effect: calming inflammation, supporting meibomian gland activity, and improving the quality of the tear film.

This combined approach is especially helpful for patients whose dry eye is driven by meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, inflammation, or long-standing tear film instability. That said, It is more of a 1 + 1 = 3 situation than a 1+1 = 2 situation.

CANDIDACY

Is the Light Therapy Protocol right for you?

Good candidates include patients who:

Have meibomian gland dysfunction

Have inflammatory or evaporative dry eye

Have ocular rosacea or chronic eyelid redness

Experience burning, stinging, tearing, redness, or fluctuating vision

Have symptoms that have not fully improved with drops alone

Want a more long-term approach to dry eye management

Light therapy may not be appropriate for patients who:

Are pregnant

Have certain photosensitive conditions

Take medications that increase light sensitivity

Have active eye infections or recent eye surgery

Have certain skin types or skin conditions that require modified treatment planning

A consultation is the only way to know whether the Light Therapy Protocol is appropriate for your eyes. We will evaluate your tear film, eyelids, glands, skin type, and symptoms, then recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

EVIDENCE

Backed by clinical research.

A treatment approach supported by growing evidence.

Clinical research has shown that light-based therapies can improve signs and symptoms of dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction. Studies have demonstrated improvements in tear film stability, meibomian gland function, ocular surface comfort, and dry eye symptom scores.

At L0•0K Optometric, we use the Light Therapy Protocol as part of a comprehensive dry eye plan. For many patients, it is combined with home care, prescription therapy, lid hygiene, gland expression, or other in-office treatments depending on the underlying cause of their symptoms.

WHAT IT COSTS

A note on pricing.

Light therapy is not covered by vision or medical insurance. Pricing is currently set at $450 per session and treatment plans vary depending on the disease state and treatment responses, but most patients we treat are needing 4 treatments.

During your consultation, we will review your diagnosis, recommended treatment plan, expected number of sessions, maintenance schedule, and cost before beginning care.
