VISION VS MEDICAL INSURANCE

Vision insurance vs. medical insurance what's the difference?

A common source of confusion. Here's how it works:

Vision insurance

covers routine eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses for healthy eyes. Plans like VSP and EyeMed are vision plans.

Which one applies?

If you're coming in for a routine exam and updated prescription, your vision insurance applies. If you're being seen for an eye health concern (dryness, redness, irritation, flashes/floaters, follow-up for a known condition), your medical insurance applies — and may not require a vision plan at all.

Medical insurance

covers eye care for diagnosed eye conditions — dry eye disease, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, conjunctivitis, etc. Most major medical PPOs cover these visits.

Why does this matter?

Knowing which type of plan applies before your visit means fewer billing surprises. We're glad to help you figure it out — just call.

OPTIONS FOR UNINSURED CLIENTS

No insurance?

We see plenty of patients who pay out of pocket. Our team can quote prices in advance for any service so there are no surprises. Specialty services like scleral lens fitting and IPL therapy are typically billed independently of insurance — we'll walk you through what to expect.
